In 1980 members
of the Town Council were interested in brightening up the town for the
springtime.
Therefore thirty pounds was spent on daffodil bulbs which were planted around
the town.
Shortly after this the Chamber of trade wanted to get involved and through
sponsorship by local businesses and banks , hanging basket poles were purchased
and the High street became alive with flowers .
Following this enhancement Alcester entered the Britain in Bloom competition. Although they did not win first time round, they were not deterred, and entered the competition again in 1982, and were awarded a certificate of merit.
Encouraged by this, Alcester in Bloom was formed and soon spring flowers, summer bedding, plants and trees had been planted around the town, some donated by local residents.
Today Alcester
in Bloom, which represents the town council, has a committee of twenty
people,
three
of which are Town Councilors. The mayor is also invited to all meetings
that
are held in the former Magistrates Court to discuss improvements and fund
raising. They also have a working committee and can be seen around the
town
keeping it litter and weed free. Over twenty organisations and numerous
businesses and townspeople get involved in the local competition.
Alcester in Bloom
encourage residents to tend the areas in which they live. This has been most
successful with Sherwell Drive, Birmingham Road, Church Street Properties,
Springfield Road and St. Mary`s Road as fine examples .
